I'd like to introduce Stephane Brien from the Cranbrook Salvation Army.

What is your role at the Salvation Army?

I am a cook for the Salvation Army, in their soup kitchen, and I (alongside caring and dedicated volunteers) prepare meals for the homeless, seniors, and anybody who needs a good meal. I feed people who need to be fed.

How is the current covid-19 situation affecting your daily operations?

Aside from the functioning kitchen(s) and its crucial staff and volunteers, the Salvation Army building has now shut down completely. It started with the closing of the Thrift Store and the cancellation of regular church services, then saw our main dining room close as we moved to serving food from the Emergency Response Truck. Meals for people are being served from the Emergency Response Truck or are being delivered to the doors of homeless and senior shut-ins, and food hampers are being assembled and distributed to local families struggling with food insecurity.

What positive or uplifting things are you seeing right now?

I see people, even people who are struggling themselves, stepping up and doing their part to support others in need.

How are you finding joy right now?

My joy comes from witnessing people giving of their time and their hearts to contribute to seeing that the needs of many in our community are supported. The volume of donations has been amazing, and the support of local businesses fills my heart everyday. People pulling together to MAKE A DIFFERENCE in the lives of others.

Is there anything specific you'd like to share, or wish people knew right now?

Stay positive, be compassionate and kind, help your neighbour
